The African connection
Brazil received close to five million enslaved Africans, far more than anywhere else, and was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery, in 1888. Palmares, a quilombo in the northeast, held out against Portuguese and Dutch forces for most of the seventeenth century under Zumbi.
