The African connection
Gaspar Yanga led an escape from a Veracruz sugar estate in 1570 and held the mountains for nearly forty years until Spain granted his people a free town — San Lorenzo de los Negros, now called Yanga. Vicente Guerrero, of African descent, became president and abolished slavery in 1829.
